While still very much a dungeon synth album sprinkled with a Sony Playstation JRPG vibe, Apparition Gauntlet warms the listener with a very steady ‘soundtrack’ approach. Many of the songs reminded me of the more mysterious zones in Final Fantasy VII: City of the Ancients, Ice Cavern, and the Niflelheim flashback theme ‘Those Chosen by the Planet.’ An absolute beautiful album to start 2022 and must own for any dungeon synth fan. Favorite track: Relics of the Forgotten.

Dear Sister, It hadn’t been there before. Of course, it makes no sense at all…it’s so old. It had to have been there. If not there, then where? My whole life in this town I never once noticed that house, but now I find myself passing it every day. Sometimes more than once. No matter where I’m going, I pass that house. I find myself lingering in front of it, staring. It’s not quite right, I think. The angles are wrong. The foundation and the roof don’t seem to be connected to the walls…it’s difficult to explain. I wonder if the front door is locked…

Apparition Gauntlet returns with “The Beckoning House”, featuring 10 tracks of old school dungeon synth. There are no dwarven ruins or hopeless battles against orc armies here, though; only an escalating sense of unease as the listener succumbs to their curiosity and enters the house that wasn’t there before. Less noisy than past AG works, “The Beckoning House” utilizes an intentionally limited sonic palette to convey a palpable, though not entirely unpleasant discomfort. Available on cassette with multiple cover color variants in January 2022 thanks to support from Euphoriadic Records.

"...This is a soundtrack, and operates as such. Like a bare-bones set with only a few formative props, the presence of the titular house creates the opportunity for significant imagined narrative. And...y'know what? That juxtaposition of environment and potential plot is something In A Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories didn't have going for it. If that's not a success in the dungeon synth arena, I don't know what is."

The music is simply top-notch: everything I crave in a synth-laden experience is inordinately well represented. If you're questing for a soundtrack to adventure, Desolation Plains delivers in spades. Like unto any great form of escapism, this is an adventure that wholly succeeds at creating a little patch of adventure outside the bounds of hum-drum existence. Plus, the protagonist wields a zweihänder, and if that little nugget doesn't wet yer whistle, I dunno how to help. Sleeping Villager
